KB5089270 patches a single flaw (CVE-2026-40370) rated High at CVSS 8.8 across three SQL Server generations at once: 2025 (CU4), 2022 (CU24), and 2017 (GDR). Anyone running these database engines is exposed, and the 8.8 score suggests network-reachable exploitation with meaningful impact, though EPSS is only 1 percent and it is not in CISA KEV or tied to ransomware.
Do this: Identify which SQL Server servicing branch each instance is on and apply the matching CU4, CU24, or GDR package from KB5089270.

Linked server queries that use MSDASQL fail with error 7416
Linked server queries that use the MSDASQL (OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers) provider and specify a provider string (@ provstr ) fail and return the following error message:
Msg 7416, Level 16
Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists.
A stricter connection validation check in the Database Engine can reject connections for certain linked server configurations that use the MSDASQL provider, even if earlier builds allowed those connections.
